 Research Imagery and Design process:

When creating this performance, Charlotte and I felt that it was important to keep space naturalistic and period. To create this, I heavily researched the mid-seventies, focusing on magazine adverts and pop-culture in particular. By staging the performance in traverse, we were able to use the architecture of the studio theatre space to create a naturalistic feeling living room and kitchen area. Areas for storage and decoration featured Beverley’s kitsch erotic ornaments, in contrast with Lawrence’s traditional art and complete works of Shakespeare, to create an environment that hinted at a cultural war between the spouses.

In order to create the atmosphere of the beginnings of a dinner party the set was treated as though it was being prepared for guests by stage management, wiping down surfaces and hoovering the carpet with shake-n-vac. This allowed for a subtly nostalgic experience for audience members on entering the space.

 Costume Designs:

These costume designs were created by photoshopping various 70s magazine adverts and appropriating them into the world of the play. Using existing imagery allowed for integrity in the designing of period clothing, whilst also played on Beverley’s vast collection of fashion and beauty magazines.

 Final Design:

This digital model was created on SketchUp and rendered on Podium.
